In this section, I discuss exploring some aspect of the EV1, lenses, techniques, or even editing. I might start with a question about how something might work, or how it has worked with other systems. Then again, it might be very spontaneous, and I just try something! It’s a place to be free to fail or succeed, although I might or might not yet have an answer. Some things take time to use over and over. This is almost like planning for the next section.

This is true practice out in the field with the camera, using it to make images. It includes observations over time and any changes in the way I use the system. As with any art, there will be times I’m simply surprised or realize finally what I’m after. I’ll work through aspects of photography with this system through use over and over until I can feel better about the reliability and predictability of what’s going on.

Settings are simply choices in the software of the camera. How I use those settings in camera is also important. For example, which user profile do I use for low-light work or landscape work and what profile settings work? How do I get sharp focus with certain lenses using which camera settings? Those are the types of questions I’ll answer for the way I work.

Leica is a German company, and this is a German phrase that is hard to translate exactly. The idea is “the essence of something.” In photography, Leica has used this term to guide them in providing photographers with the simplest way to make a great image. In part, this is why you see so few buttons and controls on a camera. I might say “keep it simple” is close, but mixed with “only what I need to succeed.” This section is kind of philosophical and consists of stand-alone essays for thought.

In my medium format work on the coastal areas of South Carolina, I sometimes press the shutter and know I’ll have a forever image. These moments are why I keep coming back and why I press the shutter each time I do. These images are the ones that mean the most to me. Here I’ll share those frames with you and the stories behind them. It’s a little less of how and a lot more of why.

What would a journey of the EV1 be without some resources! Sometimes I find things and just want to be sure I can get back to them later. Other times someone creates a truly impactful trove of information. I put links to everything I find on the EV1 that I find worthwhile.

I am somewhat of a bookworm, but photography is also about images. This section has some technical books I love, but also books of photographs, not just about photography. I believe in learning by looking, and great images inspire me, so I share those here. I put links to those books in this section, although fair warning: some are hard to obtain now!

It seems like everywhere we look, someone puts together a “tips & tricks” section. Yet, that is what I am exploring for myself, so it seems important to share a summary with you. Over time, this will expand with more information. Note: I’ll add this section as soon as there is more to share!

If you are new to Leica, the terms can be a little daunting. I put those here as I think of them to provide meaning and context. I also try to remember that sometimes I revert to my physics background, where I learned photography (it was all film and chemicals when I started!), so I include any technical things I talk about here as well.

It seems like everything on the internet has an “About” section, so I obliged and added one. Truthfully, this is a place I could add some about who I am and how I got here. It also gave me a place to put some details, almost like an FAQ.
